What are Futures?

A futures contract is a legal agreement to buy or sell a particular commodity or financial instrument at a predetermined price at a specified time in the future. Futures contracts are standardized for quality and quantity to facilitate trading on a futures exchange.

Originally developed for agricultural commodities to help farmers lock in prices for their crops, futures markets now cover everything from crude oil and gold to stock indices and government bonds. They are used by both hedgers (who want to reduce price risk) and speculators (who want to profit from price movements).

How Futures Trading Works

When you buy a crude oil futures contract, you're agreeing to buy 1,000 barrels of oil at a set price on a future date. You don't need to pay the full contract value upfront — only a margin deposit (typically 5-15% of the contract value). If oil prices rise, your position gains value. If they fall, you lose. Most traders close their positions before expiry rather than taking physical delivery of the commodity.
